Fries of New York

Fellow Biff Bam Popper, author, and musician, Luke Sneyd hipped me to this quite some time ago, in fact a while ago when the exhibition was still running back in November of 2012. Even though these things sometimes slip through the cracks of the internet, the exhibition is still cool, and findable on the webs.

Sponsored by Sir Kensington's, makers of cool spiced ketchups, the company put together this awesome pop-up attraction called "Fries of New York: An Uncommon Exhibit" at 168 Bowery in New York City. Eighty different French fries from various New York restaurants participated and no left hungry as cocoa and chili-dusted waffle fries were served. Man, I wish I could've been there.

An article about "Fries of New York" can be found here, along with images on Instagram here, and all the great stuff at the Sir Kensington's website too. Mmm… fries… And thanks, Luke!

Random Tater Pic of the Day #185

These fries come from friend and FFD contributor Sarah H. Miduski. During her trip to New York City to see Matilda The Musical, she visited Lillie's and got these fabulous parmesan truffle fries. Mmmm… Thanks, Sarah! You can read her full blog entry on the trip here.

Random Tater Pic of the Day #182

Friend and frequent French Fry Diary contributor Cindy sent this one along from The Keg Room in New York City.

"Hot homemade potato chips at the Keg Room across the street from our hotel in NYC. Total yum. Not at all salty with a spicy blue cheese dipping sauce. Awesome. They totally smoke the Friars Nook."

National French Fries Day 2014

Petite Abeille's Belgian Fries
This Sunday, July 13th is National French Fries Day. The best, and the easiest, way to celebrate Fry Day is to of course enjoy some French fries on Sunday. There are other ideas however.

Heinz Ketchup for instance is offering up recipes for Seasoned Ketchup and Idaho Fry Sauce.

If you're in New York City, there's a special deal going on at Petite Abeille with Sir Kensington's spiced ketchups. Petite Abeille is offering $4 cones of their Belgian Fries plus a choice of Sir Kensington's specialty condiments (Classic Mayo, Chipotle Mayo, Spiced Ketchup and Classic Ketchup). Wow, I wish I lived closer to one of their three NYC locations.

What will I be doing? I think I might try to visit one of my favorite local haunts for fries. I'm looking for the best, so it'll probably be the British Chip Shop or Cool Dog Café or the Pop Shop. Who knows, maybe I'll see you there. Happy National French Fries Day!

Anthony Bourdain's Favorite Fries

Ever wonder what a first class chef and world traveler like Anthony Bourdain considers really good French fries?

Here's a link to the recipe, by Chef Carlos Llaguno of Brasserie Les Halles, for Anthony Bourdain favorite fries. Check it out here.

Brasserie Les Halles, with two locations in New York City, is world renowned for their French fries. I guess I'll have to save up and get there someday...

French Fry Diary 437: Flavor Town Under Siege

The big news in food the last few days has been the scathing review of Guy Fieri's restaurant in New York City, you know, where food critic Pete Wells of the New York Times tore the chef a new one for his Guy's American Kitchen & Bar in Times Square.

For those of you who missed it, read it here.

Wow. Huh, how about that? I have commented on the Facebook, and to friends that I wish someday I could write something like that. That is a solid piece of writing, so incisive, so destructive, so hateful - and so to the point. Pete Wells hated his experience at Guy's American Kitchen & Bar obviously.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Also check out the article that accompanied the above video here.

But as noted above in Guy's rebuttal on "The Today Show" this morning, this Wells guy must have had some other agenda. You can't possibly hate everything about a place, especially when, as Wells admitted, you've gone there four times.

I've had crappy service and food at some of my favorite restaurants, and really good service food at some of my least favorite. Things change with the day. Even at McDonald's and Burger King, whose skills lie mostly in consistency, you can get different food from day to day.

And as much as I envy Pete Wells' mad writin' skillz, I like Guy Fieri quite a bit. He's the man. Anything that may be wrong will be fixed, and anything else is a fluke, I'm sure. At least until I get to review Guy's American Kitchen & Bar myself someday. Hmmm... I wonder how the fries are…

French Fry Diary 219: The Brooklyn Diner

Here's another installment of Somebody Else's Fries from The Bride. She recently attended a conference in fabulous New York City and as always, when dining where French fries were around, she pulled out her iPhone and snapped those fries.

The Brooklyn Diner is at Times Square and outside has all the shine and glitz of the city that never sleeps, but inside it's just a diner - a good diner a step above most, but looking like a standard Jersey diner.

The fries she had were very good, natural cuts typical of diners, but with an extra kick. From the picture I can see there's rosemary in there, but maybe a few other mystery herbs as well. The Bride said it was busy and the waitress didn't come by much so she couldn't ask. Can any regulars to the Brooklyn Diner let us know?

Obama Fries

Ray's Candy Store in Alphabet City, New York City, offers something called "Obama Fries."

These Belgian fries were only one dollar before the election but are now four dollars. Not really sure what that means, but there it is. The owner, an admitted supporter of President Obama, also offers "Obama Coffee."

Besides having "the best fresh cut fries in town", Ray's also serves soft serve ice-cream, frozen yogurt, hot dogs, sausages, coffee, milkshakes, and egg creams. Look them up next time you're in the east Village. And don't forget the fries... Mmmm... fries...
