Who Has the Healthiest Fries 2009

The last time we talked about this was just around this time last year.

Well, this year, the Orlando Sentinel takes a shot at it and gets the same answer - Sonic Drive-In for the win.

What is really interesting is that one of the Health Nazis' favorite targets, McDonald's, has actually climbed to second place from fourth place. That's right, Mickey D's fries have apparently gotten healthier this past year.

Hmmm... maybe that's why they are at the top of the poll at the left...

The results can be found here. Mmmm... healthy fries...

Here's the message: "So who is working on their BL Facebook video for their chance to win a $50 gift certificate?? We can't wait to see! :-) http://is.gd/vc9T"

19 Worst Drive-Thru Foods in America

Those damned Health Nazis are at it again. And it’s those "Eat This Not That" folks, who really, should know better, to be honest. They have listed the 19 Worst Drive-Thru Foods in America, and so naturally I gravitated to the favorite fried food.

The worst ‘potato side’ is the bacon cheddar potato wedges from Jack in the Box according to them. They don’t even have the testicular fortitude to have a French fry category – their assumption being that fries are never healthy I suppose. I also noted that there’s no hamburger category, but instead a cheeseburger category. They are being purposefully misleading. Elitists.

What I don’t get is if you were going to Jack in the Box and ordered the potato wedges, with the extra unhealthiness of bacon and cheddar cheese – you deserve to get an unhealthy meal. You were too stupid to order the fries instead… Jack in the Box has terrific fries, in both natural cut and curly variety. Why would you get the potato wedges?

Favorite Fries Poll - Status Update

The stats so far in French Fry Diary's "What are your favorite fast food French fries?" poll are as follows...

In first place is McDonald's, followed by a second place tie with Wendy's and Five Guys, and a third place tie with Checker's and Chick-Fil-A.

Come on, McDonald's? Really? Yes, they're good, but come on - ease, availability and consistency don't count for everything, do they? If Fatburger or Sonic were on every other corner, would they be number one?

Be original, be selective, look to your left and get your vote in! Who's got the best fries?

Take That, Health Nazis!

This article from the New York Times should give the Health Nazis something to chew on...

"Want Salad With That? Make It Fries

"Fast-food chains have recently deflected criticism of their menu offerings by adding healthy items like salads.

"But a paper soon to be released in the Journal of Consumer Research suggests that the presence of healthy options on a menu can induce some diners to eat less healthily than they otherwise would.

"“When you consider the healthy option, you say, well, I could have that option,” said Keith Wilcox, a doctoral candidate at Baruch College who is one of the paper’s four authors. “That lowers your guard, leading to self-indulgent behavior.”"

I Hate My Job Value Menu Fries

Marissa of the brilliant Chainsaw Calligraphy blog noted an interesting observation common to many fast food restaurants - "The I Hate My Job Value Menu Fries."

Read about it here along with where to get jazz radio when in Chicago. Much coolness.

Duck Fat French Fries

Another video adventure from the folks at Expert Village, this one, in eleven demented parts, is how to cook French Fries in duck fat. Why anyone would want to do that is beyond me, but here’s the link...

clickety-sizzle-click

There are eleven parts, step by step. That’s a lot of videos for duck fat fries... they’d better be good...

French Fry Science

I can't think of a better way to learn science than with the favorite fried food.

"This book opens with a simple explanation of organic chemistry and a discussion of the various materials that are needed for the projects that follow. Students are encouraged to build upon the 29 experiments presented and to develop their own inquiries. Ideas for further experimentation and a thorough discussion of safety rules and advice are included. The experiments become more complex as the book progresses. Some of them require materials available only from a school laboratory or a science supply company (a list is appended), such as maleic and fumaric acids and copper sulfate crystals. Simple black-and-white drawings complement the text, and illustrations of chemical structures help to demonstrate reactions. A sound addition to science collections."

"Chemistry Science Fair Projects: Using French Fries, Gumdrops, Soap and Other Organic Stuff" is available here.
